We are not fighting against flesh and blood; rather, our battle is against the rulers of darkness. As the Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12,
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Who are these principalities? They are not our neighbours, family, or friends. These are the spiritual forces that work behind the scenes—falling angels and demonic powers determined to hinder us from following Christ. Remember that even in the Old Testament, when evil spirits troubled King Saul, God used David’s worship to drive them away.
“And whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.” (1 Samuel 16:23)
We must understand that our fight is not with those around us, but against the invisible forces that seek to control and deceive. The devil’s goal is to use our weaknesses and distractions to keep us from fully embracing our life in Christ. When you encounter conflict—even in everyday situations, like an altercation with a conductor or a provoking stranger—remember that these are tools used by the enemy to divert your focus.
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
It is not our fellow human beings you are meant to battle, but the powers of darkness that work through them. They do not wish for you to live freely in Christ because your obedience brings affliction to their kingdom. The Bible teaches us to be vigilant and to keep our eyes on the spiritual battle at hand, using prayer as our most effective weapon.
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” (Ephesians 6:18)
Do not be deceived into thinking that anger or retaliation against those who provoke you is the answer. Instead, focus your energy on fighting back with prayer and steadfast faith. When you encounter evil or hostility, let your response be rooted in God’s strength rather than your own.
“Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21)
Remember: your battle is spiritual. The enemy is watching and waiting for any lapse in your spiritual guard. Do not allow everyday disputes or provocations to distract you from the greater war being waged in the unseen realm. Stay alert, be prayerful, and trust that when you stand firm in Christ, the powers of darkness have no hold over you.
“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” (Deuteronomy 20:4)
