Are You a Slave or a Master?

Are you a slave or are you in charge? A slave, a commander, a gatekeeper—or do you have authority? Consider this: a slave is someone who obeys a master without question, doing whatever is required, even if the master never sees them. But when you are in charge, when you are a commander, you have the power to direct and lead others.

“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.” (Galatians 5:13)

Now, what do I mean by that? Without Christ, you are already a slave—but a slave to Satan. Scripture tells us that whoever does not accept Christ remains in bondage to sin and its master.

“So Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.’” (John 8:34)

When you give your life to Christ, you are given authority. The Bible makes it clear that if you are genuinely born again, you are granted power over sin and the forces of darkness. That authority comes with responsibility—anything you lose or decrease here can have eternal consequences.

“For if you have not forgiven others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Matthew 6:15)
(While this verse speaks of forgiveness, it reminds us that our actions on earth have heavenly implications.)

To be a master, not a slave, there are key criteria you must embrace:

  1. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
Your total surrender to Him sets you free from the bondage of sin and gives you true authority.

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.” (Titus 2:11)

  2. Hold fast to the Word of God.
Immerse yourself in Scripture so that you understand who God is and what He expects from you.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

  3. Know your identity and purpose.
Understand that in Christ you are more than a slave—you are called to lead and to rule with God-given authority.

“For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

  4. Be a prayerful person.
Constant communication with God keeps you connected to the One who grants authority.

“Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

  5. Do not tolerate sin.
Sin is a trap that can quickly return you to slavery. Keep a vigilant guard over your life and refuse to let sin take root.

“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’” (1 Corinthians 15:33)

When you live as a master, you understand that every decision matters. Your authority is maintained by remaining close to Christ and diligently following His Word. Those who stray from these principles risk losing their power and returning to slavery.

“For if you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” (Isaiah 1:19)

Remember, if you are not living for Christ, you remain in bondage to Satan. But if you embrace your identity as a child of God, study the Bible, maintain a constant prayer life, and reject sin, you will stand in authority and not be overpowered by darkness.
